About the author - Doug Turner
Doug Turner has been playing the guitar for over forty years and is a brilliant exponent of many different guitar styles, but his favourite has got to be Country Fingerpickin' as played by his hero Chet Atkins, with whom Doug has had the pleasure and privilege of jamming during one of Chet's visits to the UK. Doug was a founder member of the Chet Atkins Guitar Society in Great Britain
In the early 60's Doug spent several years demonstrating Gibson guitars for Selmers, the UK Gibson importers. At the age of 19 he was the tutor on the Advanced Guitar Course at Cecil Sharp House in London. He went on to play fingerstyle guitar with Houston Wells and the Marksmen who were England's first professional recording country band and he also played lead guitar with other recording artists in the 1960' s. In recent years Doug has taught at Andy's Guitar Shop in London's Denmark Street, the centre of the UK music scene.
During his many years of playing and writing fingerstyle guitar music, Doug has worked out a revolutionary new method which puts on paper what actually goes on in a guitarist's mind as he plays. Conventional tablature does not show the whole picture, whereas Doug's method shows the left hand as well as the right hand so that all the information you need is clearly and simply presented. After a page or two of straightforward explanation you start playing right away.
The book contains Doug's own arrangements of sixteen different tunes, ranging from the simple to the sophisticated:
Plaisir d’amour, Banks of the Ohio; Freight Train; The Saints; East Virginia; Red River Valley; Grandfather's Clock; Streets of London; Michael, row the boat ashore; I’m on my way to Canaan Land; Wabash Cannonball, Wildwood Flower, I’ve been working on the railroad; Deep River Blues; San Francisco Bay Blues and a version of "Danny Boy" that will bring tears to your eyes!
So how do I get my fingerpickin' hands on a copy?
